Which track should I choose?
The decisions in an AIRS-J/1 Assessment differ by track. Candidates choose among eligible tracks unless a commissioning employer sets the track.
AIR APAC certifies people against AIRS-J/1 on three tracks for individuals: Campus, Professional and Practitioner. Judgment is how well a person decides once AI has given the answer. Campus and Professional certifications are not convertible. Section numbers refer to AIRS-J/1 v2.3. Each answer below gives the section of the Standard it comes from.
Which tracks are there, and who is each track for?
The Standard names the population of each track in section 13.
- Campus: "Final-year students of institutes of higher learning, and graduates in their first two years of work".
- Professional: "Practising managers and individual contributors".
- Practitioner: "Those who lead AI adoption or assess others".
Who chooses the track?
The candidate chooses among the tracks the candidate is eligible for, unless an employer commissions the Assessment. Sometimes an employer or an institution commissions the Assessment, and then that party sets the track. The register shows the track that the candidate sat (section 13.2).
What is the same on every track?
There is one Standard. Every track uses the same nine dimensions, the same anchors, the same thresholds and the same decision rules. The tracks differ only "in scenario complexity, stakes density and stakeholder count" (section 13). Stakes density means how much is at stake in the scenario.
Can a candidate reach Level 4 on the Campus track?
Yes. Level 4 is attainable on every track, including Campus. Level 4 asks the candidate to state a rule that would carry forward to the next decision of the same kind. It does not require organisational authority to impose that rule, and it does not require the rule to be adopted (sections 7 and 7.2).
How do the scenarios differ?
The track table in section 13 describes each track as follows.
- Campus: workplace scenarios at entry level. The person in the scenario has bounded authority and a named supervisor to escalate to. There are fewer stakeholders, and the consequences are bounded.
- Professional: full stakeholder density, organisational consequence and live authority boundaries.
- Practitioner: scenarios add conflict between several parties, a contested mandate, and ambiguity about who owns the decision.
What does a Campus certification mean to an employer?
The Standard gives it one meaning (section 13.1). The holder "met every certification rule in Section 12 on decisions of the kind an entry-level employee makes with AI in the work".
Where is the track shown?
The track is printed on the credential and shown in the register. The Standard states: "A band without a track has no meaning." (section 13.2).
Are a Campus certification and a Professional certification interchangeable?
No. A Campus certification and a Professional certification are not equivalent and are not convertible. The register records them separately (section 13.1).
How does a Campus holder reach Professional?
A Campus holder reaches Professional only by a full Professional Assessment. The Campus band gives no credit towards it (sections 13.1 and 18.2).
How long does a certification last?
A certification is valid for two years from issue (section 18.1). Recertification is a full reassessment against the version of the Standard then current, and the prior band gives no credit (section 18.2).
What if an employer commissions the Assessment?
The employer sets the track. An employer that assesses its own employees uses the Professional track or a role edition of it once AIR APAC has approved that edition (sections 13.2 and 13.3). An employer that assesses graduate applicants may use the Campus track (section 13.2).
What if an institute of higher learning commissions Campus assessments?
The credential belongs to the student. The institution receives each student's result by name for teaching and advising, as a term told to students before they start (section 13.4). The institution passes no named result to an employer. The student releases a result or credential to employers themselves (sections 13.4 and 14.4).
What is a role edition?
A role edition uses the same rules with scenarios from the work of one role family, and the edition is named on the credential (section 13.3).
Who owns the credential?
In every case the credential belongs to the person who sat the Assessment. No employer, sponsor or partner who paid for it may withhold or revoke it (section 14.4).
What this does not claim
- A track is not a level. The level comes from the Assessment, on the same scale for every track.
- Campus does not have lower thresholds, and Professional is not a senior grade. Every track applies the same thresholds and decision rules.
- No track, and no result on any track, says which job a person should be given. A certified result describes the person's judgment in AI-enabled work at the level certified, on the track sat.
<!-- R69, R70: when merged into the certification page, the build drops the standing line and the action below. -->
AIR APAC publishes the standard for judgment in AI-enabled work, certifies people against it through its official instrument, and stands behind every result.
