The nine dimensions at a glance
Judgment is how well a person decides once AI has given the answer. AIRS-J/1 describes it in \"Nine dimensions, grouped under four STEP domains\" (Section 5). Each is given here by its official name, with a plain reading beside it.

The nine dimensions, by domain
S. Structure: "Framing the problem before reaching for a tool."
| Code | Official name (Section 5) | Plain reading (AIR APAC's summary, not the Standard's wording) |
|---|---|---|
| S1 | Problem Framing | Names the real decision. |
| S2 | Scope and Constraint Definition | Sets what is fixed, what is open and what is unknown. |
T. Test: "Interrogating evidence, including machine-generated evidence."
| Code | Official name (Section 5) | Plain reading (AIR APAC's summary, not the Standard's wording) |
|---|---|---|
| T1 | Evidence Verification | Traces a claim to its source, and checks in proportion to what depends on it. |
| T2 | Assumption and Alternative Testing | Names the assumptions and tests them, including against the person's own view. |
| T3 | Risk and Failure Anticipation | Names how the decision could fail, who pays, and which harms are being accepted. |
E. Engage: "Authority, people, and being seen to act."
| Code | Official name (Section 5) | Plain reading (AIR APAC's summary, not the Standard's wording) |
|---|---|---|
| E1 | Decision Rights and Escalation | Acts within authority, escalates what needs another person's approval, and does not hand to a person or a machine what cannot be handed over. |
| E2 | Stakeholder Alignment and Disclosure | Consults who must be consulted, informs who must be informed, and discloses AI use, uncertainty and interest without being asked. |
P. Perform: "Deciding proportionately, and owning the decision."
| Code | Official name (Section 5) | Plain reading (AIR APAC's summary, not the Standard's wording) |
|---|---|---|
| P1 | Proportionate Commitment Under Uncertainty | Commits to a defensible position in the time available, at a cost proportionate to the evidence, and states the basis. |
| P2 | Consequence Ownership and Correction | Owns the outcome without passing it to the AI or the data, and separates a poor decision from an unlucky outcome. |
How to read it
- Each observation is scored from 0 to 4. Level 2, Competent, is the threshold level (Section 7). Certification needs all six decision rules of Section 12.2 to be met.
- A strong domain does not raise a weak one. In the Standard's words: "Strength in one domain does not offset weakness in another" (Section 12.1).
- Nine is "a reporting hypothesis, not an established factor structure" (Section 5.1). A dimension that does not separate from another in its domain is merged in the next major version.
What this does not claim. This page gives no level to any person; a level comes only from an Assessment. It is not assessment material, and its plain readings do not replace the Standard's wording.
AIR APAC publishes the standard for judgment in AI-enabled work, certifies people against it through its official instrument, and stands behind every result.
